Retail Roundup: May 28, 2008

A few of the games hitting stores this week.

lthough I was convinced it might remain a PC exclusive, Nerve Software’s Enemy Territory: Quake Wars arrives this week for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This multiplayer tactical experience is a far cry from the gameplay of past Quake games, yet the battle between space marines and a race of alien cyborgs seems as familiar as ever. Provided the game runs smoothly, this could be a hit for fans of games like Battlefield and Frontlines: Fuel of War.

PC gamers shouldn’t feel too glum about one of their titles being stolen by the console crowd – Bioware’s Mass Effect is now available for Windows boxes. Considering it should contain all the great content of the Xbox 360 original (minus the frame shudder and load times), RPG fans should definitely take note.

Capcom seems to know how to make a good thing better. Not only does the new Platinum Hits edition of Lost Planet contain new single and multiplayer modes, it also costs $30 less than the original. Good things really do come to those who wait.

Backbone Entertainment tries to get a new audience to bite on its quirky franchise with their port of Death Jr.: Root of Evil to the Nintendo Wii. Although the young Grim Reaper hasn’t received too much love from critics (or gamer’s wallets), we’ll have to see if the addition of motion controls lends the series something new.

Two new WiiWare releases demonstrate Nintendo’s commitment to fresh downloadable content – Dr. Mario Online RX puts a new spin on the classic puzzler while Protothea gives fans of the top-down shooter something new to look at. Now if only Nintendo’s online store sold flash memory expansion packs for the Wii, we’d be all set.
