Retail Roundup: June 11, 2008

A brief look at a few of the games hitting stores this week.

layStation 3 fans: the wait is finally over. Eighteen months after the release, it looks as though Sony’s newest console might just get its first killer app. In Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Hideo Kojima and company close out the long-running Kanami franchise with a bang. No slouch in the graphics department, the only thing which is worrying some is MGS4’s implementation of online multiplayer – the beta was fun, but few people like to find out they’ll be paying extra for critical multiplayer content.

Gohan and friends return for yet another Dragon Ball Z fighter. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is based on Akira Toriyama’s franchise, and features a number of characters from throughout its history. The game offers up online play and graphics that are startlingly like the anime’s original cell animation. Though perhaps not a title for the uninitiated, fans are bound to lap it up.

For those who simply can’t get enough of left turns, EA releases NASCAR 09 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PS2. One can expect the usual assortment of evolutionary changes that come with an annually updated sports series. Car customization has been given an overhaul this year, including the ability to import car decals and color schemes from Photoshop templates.

The worst part about last year’s Hotel Dusk: Room 215 was that not enough players got to experience it. For those who (for whatever reason) haven’t gotten enough text adventure action out their Nintendo DS, Arc System Works releases Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles. Although the early reviews have been far from promising, folks who like their games to run at a slower pace might enjoy this new mystery.
