Retail Roundup: June 25, 2008

A look at new games hitting store shelves this week.

T

hink of it as a Dirty Dozen for the Wii generation. Battlefield: Bad Company is the new shooter for Xbox 360 and PS3 that puts you in command of a ragtag squad of misfits. While the game’s multiplayer (and its microtransaction controversy) has dominated the press thus far, word on the street is that the single player campaign might have come together nicely.

The grandfather of the survival horror genre returns this week after a long hiatus. Alone in the Dark takes place in New York’s Central Park, a far cry from the dusty old mansions of games past. Apparently, some pretty nasty stuff happens in Manhattan’s green zone whilst most of us are sleeping.

Those with high self esteem and incredibly small fingers might want to take their strumming skills on the road. Guitar Hero: On Tour brings Activision’s popular rhythm game to the Nintendo DS. A new four button peripheral simulates the traditional fret buttons, while strumming is done via the stylus. Try explaining this one to the old lady next to you on the subway, commuters.

Operation Darkness is a new turn-based strategy title from Atlus which transports players to a World War II populated by vampires, zombies and werewolves. As outlandishly ridiculous as the story sounds, Atlus is a house known for great tactical experiences. We’ll find out in a forthcoming review whether the title’s gameplay trumps its silliness.

Square-Enix continues a tale that began on the GameBoy Advance: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift brings the series’ traditional turn-based mechanics to the Nintendo DS. This new platform’s dual displays and stylus controls may prove a perfect match for this grid-based tactical experience.
