Retail Roundup: July 8, 2008

BY Ed Kirchgessner  //  Retail Roundup  //  July 8, 2008

A look at new games hitting store shelves this week.

A

remake of the classic which caused many a gamer to lose the better part of the nineties, Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution releases this week on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This title updates the original’s content and controls to make it better suited to a gamepad’s layout. Turn-based strategy gamers: prepare yourselves for some late nights.

Even though videogaming isn’t an Olympic sport (yet), Sega is releaseing a suite of minigames which should let us in on some of the action. Beijing 2008 features a wide variety of events from this year’s summer games, and is available on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon continues this year’s flood of dungeon crawlers. Similar to the popular (and painfully difficult) Mystery Dungeon series, this title puts gamers in the shoes of an adventuring chocobo, collecting armor, weapons and trinkets in a number of subterranean environments. Not trying to dissuade anyone, but don’t be deceived by the game’s cover or youthful design – this one’s bound to be hard.

PC gamers without Xbox 360s and Xbox 360 owners without PCs: is this ever the week for you. Devil May Cry 4 sheds its console trappings and heads to the land of keyboards and mice. On the flipside, Unreal Tournament 3 appears on Xbox some months after it debuted on PC and PlayStation 3. Feature sets appear to be intact on both of these ports, so if you missed them the first time around, now may be your opportunity to hop aboard.
